You Are The Receipt Of Your Choices

I often get asked how I lost the weight, started running ultras, and completely flipped my life around.

Here’s the secret.

It took me a long time to understand this, but once I did, everything changed:

Your outcomes are determined by your lifestyle.

You can’t look at the receipt and blame the cashier for what you bought.

If you are fat it’s because you do what fat people do.

If you are fit it’s because you do what fit people do.

If you are faithful it’s because you do what loyal people do.

If you are unfaithful it’s because you do what unfaithful people do.

If you are a present father it’s because you do what present fathers do.

If you are an absent father it’s because you do what neglectful fathers do.

You are the pilot of your life.

There are no excuses.

When I weighed 300 pounds, I was obese because I did what fat people do.

I used to tell myself things like “it’s genetics”, “my work schedule is crazy”, “I don’t have the time”, and a whole plethora of other things which “allowed” me to avoid responsibility.

The truth??? I was fat because I did what fat people do.

Today, I weigh 172 pounds. Run ultramarathons. Bench press 130% of my body weight.

Why??

Because I now do what fit and healthy people do.

My genetics did not change.

My work schedule is still crazy.

There’s still just 24 hours in a day.

The difference is I changed my habits.

Anytime you are disappointed in your outcomes and are reaching for an excuse; reframe it.

When you say “It’s because _______ (Insert excuse)”.

I want you to reframe it to this:

“It’s because…. of MY choices”

This perspective isn’t comfortable. It’s easier to blame a fault on something or someone else. But, you cannot begin to fix what you refuse to take responsibility for.

You cannot change your outcomes by lying to yourself about what created them.

You are not fat because of your genetics, or your medication, or your work schedule, or your… whatever. YOU are fat because you made fat person choices.

The truth is there is no such thing as a “fat” gene. Genetics CANNOT change physics. Thermodynamics are a physical fact. Your excuses cannot change that.

Circumstances can influence, make things harder or create obstacles. But, none of that removes your responsibility for the choices you make.

Something that helped me in both my physical health and my spiritual health was this:

Romans 5:4 “Endurance produces character, and character produces hope”

Here is the recipe:

-Hope (Goals/ Future Outcomes) is produced by your character (Lifestyle) which is created by endurance (Habits).

Your lifestyle determines your outcomes.

And your lifestyle is determined by your habits.

You want to change your outcome? Change your habits.
