At the start of my health and fitness journey, I was on the verge of pre-diabetes—one of the biggest wake-up calls that pushed me to change my lifestyle.
In just 7 months I’ve shed 70 pounds. This transformation has been incredible, and the physical changes are undeniable!
But just as importantly, I’ve experienced significant internal transformations.
What is the true goal of a health journey? Is it just about looking good in a swimsuit, or is there something more meaningful? For me, it’s about improving my quality of life and being present for my family. When my 4-year-old daughter is pleading for me to chase her around the playground, I want to have the energy and ability to say yes.
Below are some internal health changes I’ve experienced first hand.
1. Improved Blood Sugar and Lower Risk of Type 2 Diabetes
A perfect example is my latest lab results: my A1C levels have dropped substantially, eliminating any pre-diabetic concerns.
Excess weight, especially around the abdomen, can contribute to insulin resistance, a major risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Losing weight helps the body use insulin more effectively, reducing blood sugar levels and lowering the likelihood of developing diabetes. Many people who lose even a modest amount of weight see dramatic improvements in their A1C levels, with some even reversing pre-diabetic conditions.
2. Lower Blood Pressure and a Healthier Heart
I’ve been on blood pressure medication for over a decade, but now my doctor is recommending a gradual reduction with the goal of eventually stopping it altogether.
Carrying extra weight forces the heart to work harder to pump blood, which can lead to high blood pressure, a major contributor to heart disease and stroke. Weight loss helps reduce the strain on the cardiovascular system, leading to lower blood pressure, improved circulation, and a decreased risk of heart-related complications. Some individuals who lose weight are even able to reduce or eliminate the need for blood pressure medication altogether. I am on that path; and it’s an exciting milestone!
3. Reduced Inflammation and Joint Pain
Obesity can take a serious toll on the body, putting extra strain on joints and internal systems, which leads to discomfort. Particularly the knees, hips and lower back. When movement becomes painful, it’s easy to avoid being active—but a sedentary lifestyle can make things worse. Over time, this strain will lead to chronic pain, arthritis, and mobility issues. As I started losing weight, I noticed my aches began to ease. While workouts still made me sore, I realized that doing nothing would only keep the pain around. Carrying excess weight is tough on the body, but taking steps toward a healthier lifestyle can make a real difference.
Shedding pounds reduces inflammation in the body, alleviates joint pain, and improves overall mobility, making everyday activities easier and more enjoyable.
4. Better Sleep and Increased Energy
When I started my health journey, I faced challenges with sleep apnea, snoring, restless nights, and overall poor sleep quality. But now—I sleep great. I no longer snore, which my wife has expressed great appreciation for…
Obesity is closely linked to sleep disorders like sleep apnea, where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Losing weight can significantly improve sleep quality, reduce snoring, and, in some cases, eliminate sleep apnea altogether. Better sleep leads to higher energy levels, improved concentration, and a more active lifestyle.
5. Enhanced Mental Health and Mood Stability
The benefits of weight loss extend beyond the physical—they also impact mental well-being. Studies show that losing weight can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve self-esteem, and boost overall mood. Physical activity, which often accompanies weight loss efforts, releases endorphins, which are natural mood boosters that help combat stress and fatigue.
6. Stronger Immune System and Longevity
Excess weight is associated with chronic inflammation, which weakens the immune system and makes the body more vulnerable to illnesses. By losing weight, the immune system becomes more efficient, reducing the risk of infections and chronic diseases. Furthermore, maintaining a healthy weight is linked to a longer lifespan, allowing individuals to enjoy more years of vitality and well-being.
A healthy lifestyle begins with nourishing your body well. Proper nutrition provides the essential tools your body needs to fight off illness and stay strong.
Final Thoughts
Whether it’s lowering blood pressure, improving sleep, or boosting mental well-being, the internal benefits of weight loss are life-changing. If you’re on a journey to better health, know that every pound lost is a step toward a healthier, more vibrant you.
When most people think about weight loss, they picture a shrinking waistline, looser clothing, and a more defined physique. While these external changes are exciting, the true magic of weight loss happens beneath the surface. Shedding excess weight brings profound internal health benefits that go far beyond appearance, impacting everything from blood sugar levels to heart health and mental well-being.
If you’re struggling with your health and fitness, I encourage you to take that first step. Change is absolutely possible, and your family needs you healthy and strong! It’s not about looking better; it’s about being better.
