Just One More Episode: The Rally Cry of a Couch Potato

I recall frequently falling prey to the tantalizing promise of “just one more episode”. The cycle of binge-watching offers a welcoming escape from my own troubles. It is surprisingly easy to fall into this endless loop of TV watching. Before you know it hours have slipped by.

There is no denying the allure of the sofa. After a long day sinking into the soft cushions, wrapping up in a cozy blanket and turning on your favorite show is an enticing offer though to turn down.

Having adopted a new lifestyle, I’ve found value in examining the habits I’ve left behind. I was once stuck in this never ending loop of “just one more episode”. In contrast I now find myself restless during periods of idleness.

Why is this? How did I overcome my couch potato nature?

I often walk laps around the house, traversing the hallway multiple times. I do this mostly to help hit my step goals but I also find myself feeling restless.

Issac Newton’s first law of physics states “An object in motion stays in motion.” But there is an opposite, equally as important, side to this same coin. “An object at rest stays at rest.”

Human nature tends to cling to what’s familiar, making it challenging to break free from complacency. Just like physics requires a force to set an object into motion, we need a drive to overcome our inertia. Self discipline and intentional, conscious decision making are the keys to unlocking that force, setting us in motion.

Laziness is either a deliberate choice or a byproduct of apathy. I once found myself trapped in this mindset. However, with a clear goal to prioritize health I made the conscious decision to be active. I broke free from my “just one more episode” habit.

By prioritizing hydration, healthy eating, and intentional physical activity, I’m able to break free of the couch potato habit. A healthy diet provides lasting energy needed to stay active. When combined with a commitment to move, laziness will be destroyed.

It always helps me to put things into perspective. As a father my choices serve as a model for my children and set the precedence for my family. I have to decide what kind of legacy I want to build. A legacy defined by laziness or a legacy defined by purpose and ambition?

To sum it up, it all comes down to two simple choices: nourish your body with healthy foods and commit to physical activity. It really is as simple as that.

Finally, ask yourself what legacy are you building by watching just one more episode…
