Endure: What Ultra Running Teaches About the Seasons of Life

“The Journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” — Lao Tzu

No matter where you are in life, seasons will come and go.

There will be seasons of momentum and seasons where life stalls.

Days of victory and days of defeat.

As we move through this life, hardship is a guarantee.

That’s one of the many reasons I run ultras.

Not because I love pain.

Not because I enjoy suffering.

But because ultra running is the grand teacher of a lesson most people beg to understand, yet few choose to learn.

It teaches you to endure.

In every race, there are moments when everything clicks.

Stride feels effortless.

Breathing is calm. Heart rate is stable.

You feel strong. Even unstoppable.

And then the storm comes.

It always comes.

Every ultra has this reckoning. You can outrun it for a while; but not forever.

Some ultra runners call it “the wall”. Others say “the wheels fell off”.

Call it whatever you want but it is coming to claim its next victim.

Things will be going well, and then…

Legs will tighten.

The stomach will turn.

Muscles and joints will scream.

The miles begin to slow down.

The voice of doubt in your head will get louder.

This is the moment that matters.

This is where you decide who you are.

This is where comfort dies and character is forged.

This is where you learn to endure.

Life is no different.

The wheels will fall off at some point.

Storms will hit your marriage.

Your career.

Your body.

Your faith.

And when they do, it can feel endless.

Like there is no finish line.

Like the pain will never lift.

You feel as if coming out the other side is impossible.

But know this: it’s not impossible!

You will endure.

You will take one more step. And then another. And another.

You will lean on your family.

You will lean on yourself.

You will lean on your faith.

You will trust that even if you can’t see the finish line, it exists.

There is another side to this and you will get through to it.

Whether it’s the finish line of a race or the finish line of a season in life. It’s in the storm that you discover who you are.

And if you refuse to quit…

You will endure.

“Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭3‬-‭4‬
