It was a foreign concept to walk for weight loss. Its just walking, right?!? I thought running or higher intensity workouts would be needed. As I started this journey, constant cardio seemed intimidating and not sustainable. However, I was instructed to focus on walking. I didn’t think that would work but was willing to give it a shot. I discovered walking is a great way to increase active calories burned and is a very attainable goal. Especially, for someone like me who was out of shape and obese.
To reach my daily step goal, I knew I had to spend some time on a dedicated outdoor walk each day. Just outside my neighborhood is a stoplight. Using google I measured the distance from my house to that stoplight, then down the street to the next stoplight. A round trip would total 3.1 miles. Ironically, the exact distance of a 5k. So, let’s get walking.
Couch to 5k came that first day. I put my earphones in, played some music and just started walking. As my journey progressed, I noticed something I didn’t realize before. This road sure is hilly…. But I pressed on. I got to my turn around point. I was tired, sweaty and thinking I bit off more than I could chew. As exhaustion set in I realized I inadvertently created a situation where quitting wasn’t an option. I had no way home except finish my walk back. There was no rescue. I didn’t give myself an out. So, with no other options I had to walk back. Quitting wasn’t possible. I learned something during this walk. I learned the value of perseverance and the power of eliminating excuses. I set myself up for success by giving myself no exit strategy. If I put myself in a situation where I didn’t have a choice but continue; then that is what I will have to do.
With cars passing by on the street and a couple curious stray cats as my audience; I began to enjoy these daily walks. This humble beginning was my baptism. This is how I would start down the road to weight loss. This simple, yet impactful, routine of putting one foot in front of the other, day after day. Not only did this walk aid in weight loss but it also provided some time to clear my head. I would do my daily walks first thing when I got up for the day. This would propel me into the day’s events with a sense of accomplishment, some exercise and a clear mind.
Starting your journey toward better health doesn’t have to be complicated. Begin by making walking part of your daily routine. Push yourself to new heights and enjoy the numerous physical and mental benefits that come with it.
